About Calgary Immigrant Women's Association

Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA) was established in 1982 to address the unique needs and concerns of immigrant and refugee women, youth, children, and families.

With over 50 programs and services designed to meet the diverse needs of immigrant and refugee women and their families, CIWA has grown to become the largest women-focused settlement agency in Canada.

In fiscal year 2023, we served 15,885 immigrant women, girls, and their families, offering programs and services that use a holistic approach to support them in the areas of settlement and integration, literacy and language training, employment support, and bridging programs, family violence, parenting, individual counselling, in-home support, civic engagement, health, housing, and community development.

All clients at CIWA have access to free childcare and first-language support. To do this, we rely on the generosity of generous supporters, donors, and organizations. 

A growing need

Immigration has consistently brought forth substantial and positive contributions to Canadian society. From reuniting families and providing refuge to those escaping perilous circumstances, to enhancing and fortifying our cultural tapestry, and fostering economic growth, its impact remains profound and multifaceted.

Currently, Calgary is the third most diverse city in Canada with more than 35% of Calgarians identifying as immigrants. Immigration accounts for almost 100% of the labour force growth.

By 2025, Canada is expected to welcome 1.5 million new immigrants. City estimates have Calgary growing by 62 new residents a day for the next several years, adding 110,000 people by 2027 — more than the population of Red Deer.

To address the escalating demand for services, CIWA is taking proactive measures to expand our offerings and elevate our programs, ensuring that we can effectively meet the evolving needs of immigrant women and their families.
