About BRITISH COLUMBIA MOBILITY OPPORTUNITIES SOCIETY
Since 1988, BCMOS has been working to expand the boundaries of accessibility for people with disabilities. Former Mayor of Vancouver Sam Sullivan, whose skiing accident at age 19 resulted in tetraplegia, founded BCMOS along with a group of friends with disabilities. Their desire to be active and revisit wilderness areas that were important to them when they could walk and hike motivated them to find ways to get back the freedom and inspiration of being in the great outdoors.
Participants with disabilities are able to explore the wonders of the natural environment aboard the TrailRider multi-terrain wheelchair. Designed by BCMOS, the TrailRider is an environmentally sensitive method of transportation powered by two or more volunteers. BCMOS offers many ongoing activities throughout the year, including daily hiking programs, theme hikes, Kids’ Adventure Days, and Access Challenge, our annual wilderness expedition. Other accessible activities include adaptive kayaking and paddleboarding.
