We are raising $2,500 to send Kohen to see veterinary specialists. Read the full story below.
Kohen - a lovable, brave, handsome, and smart 3.5-year-old Pitbull mix - has been battling an ongoing undiagnosed illness, and he needs your help. We are raising $2,500 for Kohen to see a Veterinary Dermatologist and Internal Medicine Specialist, to hopefully get answers so Kohen can start living a life free from pain.
Back in March of 2022, Kohen arrived to us as a 6-month-old puppy. Kohen was diagnosed with food allergies and would develop mild yeast infections in his ears and between his toes. However, Kohen’s allergies were effectively managed with a hypoallergenic diet and occasional medicated paw baths. Kohen was adopted to a loving family, and we thought all was well. Then, over 2 years later, we received word from Kohen’s family that he had been struggling severely with his health, and they were out of options to diagnose and treat him. Kohen was returned to us in May of this year, and his medical journey began.
When Kohen arrived back into our care, to say we were shocked by his condition would be an understatement. Kohen was a sickly and emaciated version of the dog he once was. Kohen’s skin was bright red and sloughing off. Kohen had numerous infected, necrotic sores and scaly patches covering his chest, neck, legs and paws, and had lost fur over 70% of his body. The sores on Kohen’s feet made it painful to walk, and lesions on his ears and ulcers inside his gums and throat would bleed with a shake of his head or bite of kibble.
We knew we would have a journey ahead of us, but we had no idea how difficult it would be. Over the last 6 months, we have spent over $3,000 on vet visits, tests, treatments, medications, and diet trials. Our staff and volunteers have spent countless hours on his intensive treatments, including daily medications, creams, baths, and ongoing wound care. Kohen has made a lot of positive progress; he has been able to put on some weight, and his skin has improved significantly from his arrival, at times even appearing nearly normal. But Kohen continues to have multiple flare-ups per month, with his wounds reopening and skin worsening cyclically. Despite voraciously eating generous portions of food, Kohen struggles to keep weight on and has frequent bouts of severe gastric symptoms. While he is much more comfortable than when he first arrived to us, despite numerous biopsies, blood tests, stool samples, allergy testing etc. we still don’t know what is ailing him, and why all the typical treatments are failing.
The next step is for Kohen to see a Dermatologist and Internal Medicine Specialist at Western Medical Specialist and Emergency Centre. This will involve more diagnostics, and new treatment plans. We were given a quote of $2,500 to cover the initial cost of diagnostics and preliminary treatments. As a small, donor-supported Adoption Centre, we need your help to be able to provide Kohen the care that he needs and deserves, and to get answers so we can provide him some relief.
Despite all the testing, treatments, and undoubtable pain Kohen lives with daily, Kohen is a joyful and loving dog, who’s full-body-tail-wag never stops, and his infectious pittie grin rarely leaves his face. Kohen loves to snuggle, play with toys, and explore outside. Kohen is so full of LIFE and deserves to live a life free from pain. We cannot do this if we don’t know what’s wrong with him. Help us help him, to be able to give him the life he deserves after so much suffering. Donate now to Make a Difference and Change Kohen’s Life.
