​Because of Balance - Blind Lives Shine

When I was 31 I learned that I had RP. I was shattered by the news and struggled for years trying to cope with this diagnosis and what it would mean for my life. I searched for help and support and to understand how to live as a blind person. I quickly learned how limited assistance is. Access to funding, accessible devices, secure housing, work, training and many other needs left people waiting months and even years to access help. 

As my sight slowly faded I became more scared and frustrated by my prospects. I wanted to be seen as someone who happens to be blind, not a blind person - and there is a difference. I just needed a helping hand to get my life back on track and be an equal and contributing member of society.

Eventually, and through many trials and tribulations, I found my way. Along that path, I discovered BALANCE for Blind Adults and was amazed. This organization is like a shortcut through the maze of blind living. They help those with sight loss traverse the anxiety-riddled quest for services and assistance, delivering skills training, education and support vital for living a dignified life.
