Our Mission

Art City envisions a world where all children and youth experience the intellectual, social and emotional benefits of art education.

Our mission is to provide the youngest members of our St. James Town community with multidisciplinary arts programming that nurtures self-worth, a sense of belonging and community resilience. Through Social-Emotional-Artistic Learning (SEAL), youth explore new ways of learning and seeing and are equipped with the social tools to become leaders. Art, we believe, can create positive community change.

About Art City in St. James Town

Established in 2000, Art City is located in a storefront studio on Sherbourne street, and fully integrated into one of Canada’s most densely populated and culturally diverse neighbourhoods. Art City is a safe and non-discriminatory environment that encourages passion for artistic expression, a connection to the community, and a difference in the children’s future. Participants are challenged with new experiences that will stimulate their artistic sensibilities and build skills focused on creativity and communication. Projects are developed and facilitated by professional artists, and Art City provides after-school help, field trips and healthy snacks for all students attending the program.

Our Impact

St. James Town is one of Toronto’s densest and most vibrant communities. It is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-linguistic community, with many newcomers to Canada making their home here. We are proud of our diversity and strength.

Home to 18000+ residents, St. James Town contends with systemic lack of resources/services relative to its population. The community is characterized by residential tower apartments which are isolated from the wider Toronto community, and residents grapple with daunting social issues.

For children and youth in particular there is a dearth of resources, especially in the arts. Yet, our community continues to demonstrate great resilience in the face of great challenge. Community-driven initiatives, collectives and individuals work together to invest in the community as they strive for positive change.

In early 2000, Art City was established by local artists and educators who sought to create more resources for children. We have since become an anchor in the community, providing a safe space for its youngest members to explore, learn, and become community leaders in their own right.
