Aptus Treatment Centre

about

About APTUS:

APTUS Treatment Centre supports over 150 children, teens and adults with developmental disabilities, including those with a dual diagnosis mental health disorder. Programs and services include school supports, clinical services, adult community-based programs and residential services. APTUS has 12 locations serving the GTA.

Mission:

APTUS provides people who have developmental disabilities meaningful opportunities in the community to explore what matters to them.

History:

APTUS Treatment Centre (formerly known as MukiBaum Treatment Centre) was founded in 1979 borne out of a vision and need for specialized services for the dually diagnosed with an initial focus on children. In 1980, the Ministry of Community and Social Services recognized the innovative children's program and established funding for Ontario students. APTUS now has 2 school programs for students ages 4 to 21 in partnership with the Toronto and York Region School Boards.
Adult day supports were added in 1987 including vocational, art, music, sensory and clinical supports. APTUS' clinical team includes Expressive Arts Therapists offering therapies and supports to assist communication and wellbeing. All of APTUS' Occupational Therapists are sensory trained and can offer sensory assessments to identify a child, youth or adult's sensory needs to support school success, communication and community integration.
The organization changed its name to APTUS Treatment Centres in 2015 as part of its strategic vision to increase impact, share expertise and expand community-based services. "Aptus" is Latin for innate ability. APTUS has now launched a year-round environmental learning site serving the greater GTA: APTUS Teaching Landscape. Located near Dufferin and Wilson, APTUS Teaching Landscape offers community programs on Saturdays open to the public, student volunteering hours, and daily programs for children, youth and adults with disabilities.
