Altitude Project’s primary mission is to support education in the remote Upper Dolpo region of Nepal. The people who live here are culturally and linguistically Tibetan. They are subsistence farmers and herders who live in some of the highest altitude villages on the planet. It takes a week to walk to the nearest road. Twenty five years ago there were no schools here and the illiteracy rate remains very high. Education helps not just the child, but the entire village!

The schools only teach to grade 6. Children wanting further education must move to Kathmandu. We provide support to the Karang Hostel there. Two of its students are the first kids in their village to continue beyond grade 5.

We also assist with greenhouses to improve villagers food security and nutrition, with simple water filtration systems to give students access to safe water, with solar lighting so they can study after dark, and with reusable menstrual hygiene kits. Girls consider these kits invaluable as they miss fewer days of school. These simple but life-changing essentials contribute to student's educational success and to the health and resilience of their communities.
