Alberta Dance Theatre offers young people a chance to work beside professional artists as equal collaborators to create an annual dance show

Alberta Dance Theatre

about

Alberta Dance Theatre provides an outstanding and unique program to dancers in grades 1-12 in the Calgary area through an intense 12-week program where dancers engage in a creative process alongside professional dance artists as equal collaborators. It is through this educational experience that dancers not only learn to create choreography and gain performance training, but also develop skills such as creative problem solving, healthy risk taking, collaboration, and leadership.

At the end of the creative process the youth company shares a production in a professional theatre setting. The show theme is usually inspired by a piece of children's literature and is danced to originally composed music. Throughout ADT's 40 years of creating inspiring and imaginative family entertainment the company has employed local professional composers, lighting designers, choreographers, theatre artists, and visual artists.

Tickets are donated to families where the ticket price is not accessible. The company also visits local age care facilities, senior's residencies, and local festivals to share their love of storytelling through movement.

Scholarship opportunities are offered annually to reduce barriers for dancers with a dedication to performing access our programming.

Senior Dancers in the company are offered extra professional development opportunities to learn more about running an arts company. They volunteer on various committees, including marketing, fundraising, costumes, and taking on the role of Dance Captain in rehearsal. Each Senior Dancer receives a letter of recommendation from the Co-Artistic Directors after the season.

Alberta Dance Theatre strives to create an inclusive environment where every dancer feels inspired to create and safe to contribute actively in rehearsals. This community atmosphere extends to the support network, families, and parents of the dancers who actively contribute to our season's artistic success through volunteer hours in fundraising, costumes, set and props, and cast events. The multigenerational experience of creating together helps us all grow as a tight knit community.
