about

Our Mission

Canada's original literacy organization, United for Literacy works with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential and contribute to society. Literacy is an essential skill in today’s world. We believe that literacy is a right.

We will achieve our mission for literacy while incorporating our values through the following actions:

  • Volunteer mobilization
  • Youth leadership development
  • Community capacity building

About This Charity

Formerly Frontier College, United for Literacy is a national registered charity dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth, and adults through literacy. Since 1899, our All Welcome! approach and innovative services have been transforming every place into a learning place.

Society demands increasingly sophisticated understanding of written language to fully participate in daily life. Today, taking literacy into communities has never been more important. Our programs are effective because they’re adaptable to the specific needs of individuals and communities, especially those who experience barriers or who do not succeed in mainstream education systems.

When you support United for Literacy, you are helping to improve reading and writing skills of adults, youth and children in communities across Canada.  You can take pride in knowing that your donation is making a profound difference in the lives of learners and their families.  An investment in literacy is an investment in the future.

What people are saying

I became involved with Frontier College as a volunteer for the Peter Gzowski golf tournaments (PGI) for literacy. Meeting the people who have learned to read later in life has been profoundly inspiring. They have become my heroes. You could say that Frontier College has changed my life too.
