Food Hamper Program Summary
The HJ Food Hamper program started in May 2020 as a result of the pandemic. In 2021, we averaged around 106 hampers per month with households ranging from 1 to 6 family members which means that the program serves between 260-288 people a month. Our program expanded in late 2021, to include "The Littlest Pantry" at the Haines Junction Community Library where community members can access non-perishable food and toiletries during library hours.
The cost of the hamper program is mostly covered by the Whitehorse Foodbank but we require local fundraising to support the cost of freight and other administrative fees. We are pleased to be a recipient of United Way funding for 2022 that will support purchasing additional frozen meat to supplement the regular items. The Hamper program takes approximately 60 volunteer hours a month, plus the in-kind support from volunteers for use of their vehicles. A huge thank you to our local volunteers, community supporters and sponsors.
Sponsors/Supporters: Champagne and Aishihk First Nations, The Village of Haines Junction, The Whitehorse FoodBank, GP Distributing, United Way Yukon, and Wild Coast Carpentry
Frozen Meal Program Summary; this program was discontinued in 2021
With the sale of the Cozy Corner, the Frozen Meal program is closing. The LGA will be taking over this program. The program will no longer operate as part of the FOOD Association. The program operated from April 2020 to January 2022. There 4721 frozen meals distributed to the community of Haines Junction and Kluane First Nation. It was wonderful to partner with local businesses during the pandemic to help support the economy. There was lots of great support from local volunteer groups like the Fire Department, Village of Haines Junction and the Lions Club. A big thank you to all of the volunteers for the support. The in-kind support in particular from the Cozy Corner was instrumental in the success of the program.
