CELL is a nonprofit society incorporated under the laws of British Columbia, and a federally registered charity. Its mission is to train and inspire Canada’s next generation of public interest environmental litigators by providing junior lawyers and law students the opportunity to gain hands-on litigation experience working as part of a team on carefully selected and closely supervised public interest environmental cases.
Since our founding in 2016, CELL students have had the chance to hone and develop practice skills through a variety of environmental law cases in different settings, from civil actions, to environmental assessments, tribunal proceedings, and judicial reviews. Law students from across BC and Canada have participated in CELL’s program.
CELL is also proud to be an educational partner in Canada’s national, youth-led climate lawsuit, La Rose v. Her Majesty The Queen, in which fifteen young Canadians, from seven Canadian provinces and the Northwest Territories and from diverse backgrounds, have filed a lawsuit against the federal government of Canada for contributing to dangerous climate change. Using this lawsuit as a vehicle for experiential learning, students enrolled in CELL’s educational program will gain hands-on experience in developing and running complex public interest cases and develop competencies and skills relevant to public interest legal practice. By supporting CELL, you can help us to provide cutting-edge opportunities for training tomorrow’s environmental defenders, and to promote access to justice and the rule of law now and for years to come.
