About HLNA:
Located in Nova Scotia, the Hants Learning Network Association (HLNA) has provided free literacy programs to adults, children, and families in Hants County for thirty years. Our mission is "to improve the lives of residents by promoting lifelong learning and providing opportunities for all to improve their literacy skills in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment."
Free Adult Learning Opportunities
We offer free daytime and evening classes and tutoring for adult students who want to improve their reading, writing, math, social studies, science, and computer skills to better their lives, access further education, complete the CAEC (high school equivalency), and increase their employment options. A key feature of HLNA's programs is that teachers work with students at their own pace to meet their goals.
Free Family Literacy Programs
Hants Learning Network Association offers free family literacy programs to families with elementary school-aged children. The "Family Literacy Fun!" program takes place weekly with a special monthly family workshop at our learning centre. Facilitators work with adults and children together to make learning fun for the whole family.
Free Tutoring for Elementary and Middle School Students
Free tutoring is provided to children in elementary and middle school once a week throughout the school year.
Connecting through Conversation
Newcomers are invited to join community members once a week for this social group to get to know their neighbours, their community, and programs and services available to them.
Current Fundraising Initiatives:
Learner Supports
We understand the importance of supporting the whole person. Most of our learners have lower incomes and struggle to have money for transportation, food, and other necessities. They can’t learn if they can’t get to class or tutoring and they also can’t learn without healthy food in their systems. Through fundraising and small grants, we aim to provide help with transportation costs, free nutritious snacks and lunches, and other necessities. Whenever we have the funds, we offer grocery store gift cards to those who are struggling. Transportation in particular is a need of many of our students since there is no public transit system in our area so we provide gas cards, Dial-A-Ride/taxi payments as much as we can.
Resources
HLNA serves a wide range of learners in terms of age, skills, abilities, and goals. A wide variety of resources are required to meet their educational needs.
