about

First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto, like all UU congregations, is autonomous, self-funding and governed by a Board of Trustees elected annually by our members. However, we gain great strength and numerous services by being a member of a larger movement. We are one of more than forty member congregations in the Canadian Unitarian Council (CUC).

We are a vibrant, diverse, intergenerational community of people from across Toronto who come together seeking answers to their questions about life, healing for their hurts, and inspiration to live into their best selves within our complicated world.

Our Mission and Vision

We welcome all to come together to seek to understand the meaning of our lives, connect with others as we are, and serve life to build a better world.

Seek freely

Connect authentically

Serve passionately

First is a beacon of hope and inspiration in Toronto. We move hearts, hands and minds to make our commitments to love and justice come alive.

Our Eight Principles

We draw from many religious and ethical sources, but the covenant which binds us together is the affirmation of our eight principles.

As Canadian Unitarian Universalists we covenant to affirm and promote:

  1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  2. Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations;
  3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
  4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  5. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
  8. Individual and communal action that accountably dismantles racism and systemic barriers to full inclusion in ourselves and our institutions
