Around 2001, my younger brother Danny was diagnosed with schizophrenia. As our family struggled to grasp this reality and the difficulties of living with and supporting a person with schizophrenia, my brother was dealing with his own demons. These demons took his life in 2012 in the form of suicide. The suffering for my brother was too much to continue life with this disease.
Although our family lives with the pain of not having Danny in our lives anymore, I am comforted by the thought of him no longer suffering. Because of our trials, I am a huge supporter of the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta who helped me personally in understanding this awful disease and how to support a loved one who has been diagnosed with it.
