St. Demetrius Development Corporation (SDDC) is a not-for profit charitable organization dedicated to serving the evolving needs of seniors. We operate a 152-bed long-term care home, i.e., the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre and a 259-unit independent living senior apartment building, i.e., St. Demetrius Senior Apartments. We also offer a wide range of community programs and services to seniors living in the community.
At the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre, we take care of seniors with some of the most complex chronic health conditions, who need specialized round-the-clock care and assistance with daily living. Our Michael and Sophia Witer Special Care Unit is home to seniors affected with various cognitive challenges, including Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Our staff are highly committed and provide exceptional care. Their unhurried warmth and personal touch enrich residents’ daily experience.
We have a growing number of programs and services for seniors living in the community. Our weekly “Stay Connected” Recreational Program, held in-person prior to the pandemic was quickly transformed into virtual program when the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Currently, we offer both, in-person and virtual recreational activities, ranging from chair yoga, arts and crafts to culture-focused workshops, book club, walking club, bus trips and more. To help seniors access our virtual programs, we have developed a highly successful senior-friendly technology education program, comprised of group training and one-on-one coaching sessions. Through our Meals-on-Wheels program, we deliver freshly cooked ethnic food to East European seniors in the community.
For seniors who can live independently, our St. Demetrius Senior Apartments is the best place to be. With on-site common areas for recreation and socialization, seniors can maintain active lifestyles and enjoy being part of a vibrant community. We operate 28 rent-geared-to-income units for low-income seniors.
Our robust volunteer program engages seniors of different generations and young people in exciting volunteer opportunities. Volunteers help us with all of our recreational activities, organization of community events and fundraisers.
Underpinning our care and services for seniors is a shared community vision of seniors’ care and respect for the unique lives of seniors.
SDDC was built on a solid foundation of community leadership, community involvement, dialogue and partnerships. With the continued support and involvement of our community and through our strong community partnerships, we are able to sustain and enhance the great care and services we provide to our seniors in need, as well as introduce new ones.
We are committed to providing the best care and reducing social isolation of seniors. All of our programs and services promote a sense of self-wroth, accomplishment and belonging to a community.
Our organization belongs to the community.
