Pacific salmon in British Columbia are a 'keystone species' that support more than 130 other species including plants, animals and people. When salmon spawn, they feed wolves, bears and eagles. Sometimes their hungry captors will drag the salmon carcasses farther into the forest, where they will feed insects and microorganisms, and release life-giving nitrogen that allows our coastal trees to grow so large. In turn, these giant trees support countless wildlife, and so the cycle continues. But if our salmon disappear, it will cause a cascading domino effect that will tear through our ecosystems. The good news is that salmon are very resilient, and there is a passionate army of volunteers dedicated to their conservation and restoration.

For more than 30 years, the Pacific Salmon Foundation has provided financial support and technical expertise to more than 300 volunteer streamkeeping groups across British Columbia and the Yukon. These volunteers operate small community hatcheries, restore and monitor salmon habitat, and work in schools to educate our children about salmon and how to protect them.
