About Fundraiser
Fundraiser by Iqaluit Humane Society - Nunavut's first and only animal shelter
NOTICE: We reduced the goal to $20,000 ... the winner will be drawn very soon so get your entries in today!
We do not get any government funding, the City provides us a space, but no funds for staff ... we depend on donations.
Our doors being open means hundreds of animals a year are not shot at local landfills all across Nunavut.
It is a grim reality, but if we cannot raise enough each year to keep our staff, supplies and medical budget going there really is no place else for these animals to go and they will be destroyed.
Maybe one day the Territory and City will be able to support us like other Provinces and Territories support their animal shelters, but for now we will do everything we can to keep growing and going! Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. Our paws are crossed we can meet our goal!
Exciting once-in-a-lifetime chance to visit our animal shelter and experience Arctic living!
Thanks to our sponsor First Air we have partnered with RedStone Media on a fundraiser that will bring 1 lucky winner and 3 of their guests to Iqaluit, Nunavut for 3 nights and 4 days! The winner and their guests will fly on First Air from Ottawa to Iqaluit, get a taste of the arctic on a full two-day excursion with Arctic Kingdom, staying in the beautiful Frobisher Inn, dine at local restaurants, and visit us at our rescue to meet the cats and dogs at Nunavut’s first and only animal shelter! The winner and their guests will be featured in a number of social media channels and in the 2018 Canadian Dogs Magazine Annual and Animal Wellness Magazine. For every $25 dollars donated to the Iqaluit Humane Society we will enter your name into a draw to win this amazing trip AND every donor will receive a free subscription to Animal Wellness Magazine! *e.g. donate $200 and get 8 entries! **in the event the group is not from the Ottawa area Aeroplan points are available to get the group from their home to Ottawa to connect to the First Air plane. **full contest rules available on our website www.iqaluithumanesociety.com
In addition to a chance to win this amazing trip 20 lucky people will also win a subscription to Canadian Dogs Magazine Annual!
It's a long road ahead, but with caring considerate animal-loving community minded partners like First Air, the wonderful people at RedStone Media, and sponsors like Arctic Kingdom and the Frobisher Inn and all the wonderful people out there that have opened their hearts to us, hey, we just might get there sooner than we think!
Background:
Nunavut’s first and only animal shelter is growing! Thanks to First Air we have been able to continue sending rescues to the SPCA of Western Quebec for re-homing, do more outreach to the whole of Nunavut, rescuing more animals while still serving Iqaluit's rescue needs. Thanks to the Globe and Mail exposure we had last winter we have been able to save the legs of 6 pups, run a free vaccine clinic for Iqaluit, and we brought the Chinook Project to Iqaluit offering over 100 free spays and neuters, as well as health check-ups and vaccines to dogs and cats (over 150 animals helped in 5 days!) http://aptn.ca/news/2016/06/27/finding-a-doctor-in-the-north-is-hard-enough-try-finding-a-vet/
We have also brought over 75 animals now from communities to be re-homed and anticipate more and more as people get to know us and what we do and know that it is possible to ask us for help no matter where in Nunavut they live. On top of all of this we have been able to do something we have never had the ability to do in the past … have three staff! WOW! What a game changer for an animal shelter to have people dedicated to the care of the animals and helping with everything from paperwork, to vet visits, establishing foster homes and finding homes.
We have come so far in the last few years and we are excited about the future. We dream sometimes of a new building, more cages, a stable medical fund for emergencies, and now that we have seen the benefits of staff it has opened our eyes to the possibilities.
We run on donations. We work month to month, fundraiser to fundraiser, taking it all one step at a time. We have no government funding or contracts to support us and what we do, but we plan to have staff work on proposals and long-term planning. We make every fundraised dollar count and we always make do with whatever we can. Since experiencing running with staff we have had the opportunity to care for more animals, spend more time rehabilitating the ones that need extra attention, we’ve been able to manage the additional workload of bringing community animals into our care, caring for animals sometimes several times a day for the young, ill or weak ones. We are also able to spend more time on rehabilitation, especially for our abused or neglected dogs that need intensive care until they can trust people again.
