We are community-inspired and dedicated to positively impacting the lives of individuals and diverse communities living with, at-risk for or affected by HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C in London-Middlesex, Elgin, Oxford, Perth, Huron and Lambton counties.
Red Scarf brings our community together to both raise awareness about and bring an end to HIV-related stigma in our community and increase access to prevention, testing, and treatment.
Red Scarf also provides us with a vital opportunity to connect community members with the free programs and services we deliver through our Client Support and John Gordon Home programs. For example, our Wellness Assistance Fund provided clients navigating systemic barriers to access with over $7500 of supports last year. These funds allowed us to meet individuals where they were at to support access to essential services and supports including: bloodwork, medical records, prescriptions, dental bill coverage, vaccines (shingles, HPV), a hearing aid, vitamins, a surgical boot, a footbath, sunscreen, cloth masks, grocery carts, refurbished phones and tablets (to reduce social isolation during COVID-19), a storage unit, keys and locks for shelter stays, a scooter rental (following surgery), a washing machine (for a single Mom with 5 kids), TV rental for extended hospital stay, laundry cards, glasses, briefs, a strawberry plant, and craft/colouring supplies.
These supports and services honored individualized needs and also supported individual and community wellness, empowerment, and connection to ensure that clients not only survived, but thrived, during exceptionally challenging times.
Red Scarf is centering the stories and experiences of community members living with HIV this year to help us end stigma through storytelling. Watch these individuals’ powerful, self-directed stories below and visit redscarf.ca to learn more.
