The Crowsnest Historical Society (CHS) was formed in 1974 by a group of involved Crowsnest Pass citizens.  In 1983 the CHS purchased the Coleman High School building, which was built in 1936. This building, now the site of the Crowsnest Museum, has been designated as a provincial heritage resource.  In August 1985 the Crowsnest Museum was opened for public viewing on an irregular schedule with admission by donation.  Currently the approximately 60,000 artifact collection includes displays of early pioneer life, underground mining, town businesses, wildlife, and military and police activities.  In addition to the many displays, the Museum holds a comprehensive archive of an estimated 80,000 documents and images.  The combined collection reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Crowsnest Pass and its people.  At present the Crowsnest Museum is open year round and employs three full-time staff members.

The Crowsnest Museum is the facilitator of cultural history of the Crowsnest Pass.  Through its many programs and services the Museum brings the history of the Crowsnest Pass alive, both to members of the local community as well as to the many tourists who visit the area.  The Museum’s services include educational programs, community events, top-class archival facilities, research services, heritage initiatives and volunteer programs.
