The Foundation's focus is on directors and their role in the governance process. The Foundation undertakes and supports empirical research on corporate governance issues through the Canadian perspective.The Foundation's research creates new knowledge of practical interest for Canadian directors and boards of Canadian companies. The Foundation is both a 'giving' and a 'doing' charity, although primarily a doing charity. As a giving charity, it provides research grants to doctoral students through the Robert Bertram Doctoral Research Awards. As a doing charity, it invests in commissioned research on specific topics of interest to directors determined by the Foundation.
