About Us
Green Action Centre is a not-for-profit environmental education organization that focuses on providing practical solutions for sustainable living. For over 35 years Manitobans have looked to us for information on active transportation, composting, waste reduction and resource conservation.
We work with partners and community networks to identify down-to-earth solutions to climate change, traffic congestion, overconsumption and waste. We believe active sustainability is achieved through education, awareness and action.
Primary Areas of Focus
Composting and Waste Reduction
The average household can divert up to 40% of their household waste through organic composting activities. We work to deliver education programs and public presentations on composting, support and guidance through our compost info-line, and in offering Master Composter courses. In 2015, we launched Compost Winnipeg, a social enterprise that caters to offices, multi-family residential buildings, on-site composters, events, small restaurants and cafés.
Workplace Commuter Options
We help Winnipeg employers meet the growing demand for cycling, walking and transit options, and create an environment where employees arrive healthy and ready to work.
Commuter Challenge and Jack Frost Challenge
Each June we deliver the Commuter Challenge – a fun competition among workplaces and between cities to log the highest participation of people choosing to bike, bus, carpool or walk to work. In February, we host the Jack Frost Challenge to get Winnipeggers outdoors and celebrating winter.
Active and Safe Routes to School
We work closely with Winnipeg schools and the City of Winnipeg on issues related to improving active transportation options for children and youth. We facilitate the award-winning School Travel Planning process, sit as members of the Active Transportation Advisory Committee and were key stakeholders in the development of the Pedestrian and Cycling Strategies.
Your donation – and we thank you for it - supports down-to-earth, practical solutions for greener living.
