About TETRA SOCIETY OF NORTH AMERICA

For 35 years, Tetra Volunteers have been creating customized assistive devices that support independence and enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities of all ages. Made by skilled technical volunteers, Tetra Solutions facilitate a wide range of activities, including communication, eating and drinking, education, and recreation. We envision a world where people with disabilities feel empowered and inspired to imagine what’s possible. Every donation helps counter social isolation, bringing confidence, self-esteem and new skills to people in your community.

A skiing accident at the age of 19 left Sam Sullivan tetraplegic and exposed him to the reality of the obstacles in the environment around him. Sam envisioned an organization that would help anyone with a physical disability to establish their independence and reconnect with the community. In 1987, Sam founded the Tetra Society of North America with the goal of engaging skilled volunteers to construct custom assistive devices to enhance the lives of people with mobility and dexterity impairments.

Tetra has expanded to include chapters in communities across Canada and the United States. This unique program facilitates greater independence and inclusion within communities. Over the years, projects have addressed a huge range of challenges, from devices that help at home, at work, and even the wheelchair attachment Sam used as Vancouver’s Mayor to wave the flag at the closing ceremonies of the 2006 Turin Olympics.
