SafeLink Alberta Society is a non-profit organization that has been serving and advocating for priority populations in Calgary and southern Alberta since 1983. Previously known as AIDS Calgary (1983-2013) and HIV Community Link (2013-2022), our mission is to reduce the risks associated with sexual activity and substance use through low-barrier, non-judgmental, and informed programs and services.
Our key populations are those disproportionately affected by HIV and other sexually transmitted and blood borne infections (STBBIs), as indicated by public health data. This includes gay, bi, and other men who have sex with men, people who use drugs, Indigenous community members, African, Caribbean, and Black community members, and people engaged in sex work.
We provide the following services in Calgary and Medicine Hat:
- Support Services: SafeLink Alberta’s support service teams provide services such as peer support and systems navigation. Services are offered through drop-in spaces in each city, via street outreach, and in community locations where members of key populations congregate (such as parks, bars, bathhouses, community partner locations, etc.).
- Clinical Services: SafeLink Alberta’s clinical services nursing team offers low-barrier testing and treatment for sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) and related health services, including basic wound treatment and care, pregnancy testing, and health education and support. Services are delivered at both our Calgary and Medicine Hat office locations, as well as through remote offsite means within each community and in surrounding rural and remote areas.
- Education: SafeLink Alberta’s Education team facilitate education to key population groups and service providers. Standardized and customized curriculum is offered online and in person, and some is delivered through a fee-for-service model.
SafeLink Alberta follows principles that prioritize dignity, autonomy, and the voices of people with lived experience.
